Focusing the interests of the German Defence Industry
The Defence Industry Committee (AVW) is heavily dependent on the Government. It is also a sector of strategic importance, where the State plays a dual role as it has a monopoly on defence procurement and, at the same time, is the mechanism that controls exports.
The AVW represents the defence industry to politicians, the public and industrial interest groups at national and European level. The Committee’s activity focuses on drawing together and defining what the German industry’s defence and armaments policy interests are. In addition, the AVW functions as a contact partner for politics and media (giving the defence industry a more identifiable face and voice). The AVW was founded in 2000, but already existed as a working task group since 1987.

The defence industry in Germany sees itself as the mainstay of German foreign and security policy. The industry pools core competencies and state-of-the-art technology, which make intra-European and transatlantic cooperation possible in the first place. The defence industry is of strategic importance. To fulfil its responsibility to the Bundeswehr and the Bundeswehr’s allies, the German defence industry produces high-tech products that are held in high regard worldwide. The industry is responsible for equipping the Bundeswehr with the best possible devices currently available on the market – and not least in providing the best levels of protection and ensuring maximum security for German soldiers. Given this background, it is consequently essential that Germany has an effective defence industry working for Germany in Germany.
