The historic eastward enlargement of NATO and the EU mean the amount of work in international bodies has grown in volume and importance.
The BDI is an official member of the ASD (AeroSpace and Defence Industries Association of Europe).
Defence industry representatives, who are appointed on an ad personam basis, promote the BDI’s interests in the German delegation to the NIAG (NATO Industrial Advisory Group).
The work of the ASD concentrates on enhancing the competitive market position of its members from the aerospace and defence industries, in particular with regard to European Security and Defence Policy. As the main group of the CNAD (Conference of National Armaments Directors), the NIAG, in conjunction with the CNAD’s other Main Armaments Groups (covering land, sea and air warfare), is tasked with engaging in various issues by undertaking pre-feasibility studies as part of preparatory phase planning at NATO. In the past, the NIAG has successfully conducted studies on topics such as DIRCM against terrorist threats, sniper locating systems, UAV control system standardisation, and aircraft launcher weapons interoperability, etc. Highest priority has been given to nine selected topics, which were part of the DAT (Defence Against Terrorism) programme. Pre-feasibility studies have been conducted on these topics in 2004/2005.
In December 2006 NIAG was again requested by CNAD to carry out 4 additional DAT-studies in 2007, 2 related to the work on Defence against Mortar Attack (DAMA) and 2 related to Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP).
